Product Launch Readiness: Making the Transition from R&D to
Profit-Making Operations


A major biopharm company was ready to begin marketing a hot new product, only to find that it lacked the manufacturing capacity to support production. The firm's revenue and market share fell, along with its stock price. Such stories of scientific success being overturned by operational failure are far too common. They underscore the fact that the payoffs of R&D efforts hinge on the ability to shift from a culture of development to a culture of operations in time to support full-scale product launches. The author outlines a framework for ensuring operational readiness for product launches. Case examples of how the framework has paid off for individual companies are cited.

Perils of a Big Idea

In 1994, Molecular Dynamics was a $40 million manufacturer of imaging instruments. It then spotted an enormous but perilous opportunity: building the next generation of instruments for DNA sequencing. After five years and $25 million in development spending, MD launched its Mega BACE sequencing technology. MegaBACE sales have reached $150 million. The article describes the story of the company’s high-stakes wager on its ability to develop the technology, and how PRTM worked with management to save the struggling project at a critical junction.

Reaping the Rewards of Empowerment

The conference, held in Philadelphia, was organized by the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development, in partnership with the Management Roundtable. The article summarizes the presentations of the following speakers: Robert Cooper, author of three popular books on product development and product leadership; Jeff Antos, president of the Beacon Hill Technologies consultancy; Charles Gombar, a senior director at Wyeth-Ayerst; Susan Speziale, representing Pharmacia; David Zuckerman, of the Customized Improvement Strategies consultancy; and Allan Wehnert of Denmark-based Lundbeck.
